Expert Tip. Originally built as a private residence, the 19th century Morrison Clark Hotel was converted in 1923 into an inexpensive club for soldiers and sailors. First Ladies, including Mamie Eisenhower and Jacqueline Kennedy, presided over the club. Years later, the club was purchased by M. Frank Ruppert who, following a trip to China, added the hotel's Chinese Chippendale porch and the Shanghai style roof.
