While the room was clean, this was easily the noisest and smallest (but most expensive) room of any 4 star hotel we stayed in in Europe. Also, my recommendation is that you clarify any conditions before you stay there. The penalty for reducing our stay for one night was one full night cost (we had already stayed 3 nights) even though we had a sick family member we needed to see some distance away. The lack of flexibility and understanding definitely dropped my opinion of the hotel. However, the noise levels and room size had already caused me to rate this as the poorest hotel of our entire stay in Italy and France. The service of the desk staff (other than management) and restaurant staff was fine.

We had ordered a superior room with balcony. However, our room was very basic, with basic and tired furniture, no sitting area and no comfortable chairs or a table. The balcony was adjacent to the swimming pool with no privacy and the furniture of the balcony was also very basic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the room met the requirements of a superior 4 star hotel room. There was a 10 minutes walk into the town center along a nice seaside promenade, ok when the weather is good.

The entire staff and service at the Royal Sporting was exceptional. The main dining room food was fabulous, as was the morning breakfast buffet. We had a sea view room. As the hotel is located just above the road, there was some traffic noise, but that didn't bother us as the sunrises and sunsets are spectacular and, knowing we weren't in the country, we expected to hear some of the life of a town. We would not hesitate to return.

Very good experience. One surprise: when you eat in the hotel you cannot receive the bill for your meal and you only see it when departing. So if you dont remember what you have ordered you cannot check. It is somewhat strange. The meal were excellent.

Portovenere is a beautiful, picturesque town, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We took the bus from the train station to the hotel, and it turned out the bus stopped right across the street! The hotel itself was very nice, with a wonderful restaurant and a separate bar that stays open until midnight. Our room was above the bar and was noisy one night, but otherwise we were very pleased. We had a wonderful private balcony with a fantastic view!

We were glad we chose this hotel because it was away from the traffic but still close enough to walk into town. The restaurant was very good and the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Hotel staff did not show much interest in guests - not helpful over bags etc. Difficult reception area as stairs down and then up for anyone with disabilities. Town is a gem and you must walk to the top of the castle for the wonderful view.

Everything is pleasant, nice and clean. The only problem with the room is the bathroom, which is so narrow to be uncomfortable, especially for a long stay: for one weekend it is ok.

it is not the hotel I was expecting. my room was real poor with aged fornitures and an overall poor look. the hotel should be rated a lower level than the current.

The pool at this hotel was very welcoming, especially considering most of Italy's hotels don't have pools at all. The view from the breakfast room, the pool, our balcony were all BEAUTIFUL! The thunder and lightening storm prevented us from really being able to take advantage of the pool/beach. This hotel is a trek to get to, however. From La Spezia main rail staion, you walk about 8 blocks to a bus stop. THe bus comes every 30 min and takes about 20 minutes to get to Portevenere. However, it stops in Portevenere for about 15 min...and this is too far to walk to the hoel with luggage...so you must wait on the bus until it leaves again, and the hotel is just 4 more min. away. To get to Cinque Terre you MUST go through La Spezia. We wish we had known that ahead of time. That means a bus ride to La Spezia, trek to the train station and then the train ride (10 min) to Cinque Terre. VERY SMALL shower (and bathroom overall).

Hotel was beautiful and well maintained, but the actual rooms were not 4* standard. Very very basic rooms with no facilities, i.e. no tea/coffee making facilities, no trouser press,no use of iron, very little information in room regards facilities and local area, no comfortable chair to sit in absolutly no luxury about the room provided, everything very basic, very poor lighting if one wanted to read. The shower was tiny and not comfortable to have a shower in, the bathroom was badly designed in relation to the siting of loo and shower and the actual shower in the second room was faulty and I was very lucky I wasn't electrocuted. We were allocated a room on arrival that had no balcony, no sea view or garden view and were very disappointed. We objected and were moved after the 3rd day to a room with balcony and seaview. Whilst this room was better than the first it was only so because it had the balcony and seaview. The room itself was still very basic with no feeling of luxury, just adequacy. As we were only staying for 6 nights, we were not very happy with the situation. The fact that we had booked through the Venere web site and the hotel had to pay the wedsite commission seems to have been a factor in the allocation of the room, as this fact was pointed out to us when we queried our allocation. Whilst the hotel was spotlessly clean and well maintained there were a few errors made in our final bill, which was also unsatisfactory. Overall, I don't think we got good value for our money.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Royal Sporting in Portovenere. The people were fantastic. The only issue of contention is the dated quality of the facility. It has a feel of being in a different time, it would help if the room furniture and lobby were upgraded. Other than that, it was clean, located well and a great place to stay. Thank you!

A good choice in Portovenere and ideal for touring the Cinque Terre. Be sure to confirm a room with a balcony and sea view before you arrive. Pool & breakfast are great, the beach is just fair.

A beautiful hotel. Excellent service, and good food, in the restaurant. It's just a pity it rained for the 2 days I was in Porto Venere. And I don't really like single beds. Apart from that, no complaints whatsoever. I've already recommended your hotel to several friends in Melbourne who are planning trips (they're tired of me raving about Italy)to your wonderful country. Thanks for helping make my trip an unforgettable expedrience.
