after many travels to both the USA and Honolulu this accomodation would hve to rate as the worst we have encountered, there was no phone in the room no clock crockery and cutlery for one person and the first hotel that insisted on a key deposit even though the desk would not be open at the time we had to check out, overall the place was a dump it would be more suited to a homeless shelter and i think tenting would have been more comfortable even the sheets didn't fit the bed NEVER NEVER again and I could not recomend it to my worst enemy

I looked at the pictures and thought it was a very nice hotel. When I got there it was not what the pictures looked like at all. If you are in a single room it is very small and with no carpet. Luckly I was with my husband and our room was ok, but not enough room. I didn't have enough space to open my suitcase and it was some what small. They were gracious enough to give us a bigger room. We got married while staying there and they bumped us up with no additional cost to a room the size of a small apartment. It had a kitchen area but you couldn't use anything but the refrigerator. They did give us some candies, soaps, and lotions. But I think that was because we were getting married. If I had more money when I went I would have defently not stayed there.

Ok, so I guess for most people a little light should go off in their brain when they see a hotel that is on average at least $50 cheaper than any other hotel that you can find. I, on the other hand, was trying to be cheap, and I figured, "ah, it won't be a big deal, it's just a place to sleep" WOW! was I mistaken, I don't think that I could have fallen asleep in this room if I tried. I cannot put into words how disgusting and run down this place was. If you have seen the movie "Hostel" I felt as if I were in the movie, and that I would wake up the next morning drugged and missing a kidney. The bed was tiny, the entire room was tile, and looked as if I were sleeping in what used to be someone's dining room. The whole room looked like an apartment that had been converted into two units and turned into motel rooms. I was so disappointed. I went back to the lobby, if you can call what they have a lobby, a little room with a clerk behind a glass window and cage. She offered up a larger room and gave us the "Keys" we went into the larger room, to find more disappointment than the previous room. This room had blue carpet that looked like it hadn't been cleaned in at least a decade and had the appearance of brownish black. The carpet had ripples in it where it looked like it hadn't been properly stretched and was completely worn down. I immediately demanded my money back and got hit with the mandatory one night charge. Then we spent the next 3 hours driving around waikiki to find a hotel and finally found one and ended up paying $1200.00 more for the entire week than we had anticipated, but I felt it was well justified. So just a tip if you plan on staying in waikiki and you wanna save a buck, "don't!" I wouldn't stay at this place if they paid me to.

WORST HOTEL EVER. We arrived only to find out that we had been upgraded without our knowing due to having a third person there which doubled our cost. The woman at the front desk - an Asian woman- was incredibly rude, unfriendly, unhelpful and forceful. We couldn't switch to another hotel due to Pro Bowl weekend and maximum capacity. The actual room was dirty, old, and everything (chairs, fridge, bed, shower) was broken. Our next door neighbors were smoking marijuana the entire time and it seeped into our room. Not worth the $150 a night that we payed. DO NOT STAY HERE - horrible hotel and customer service.

The hotel fell way below proper standards. No cleaning of rooms, sheets decrepit and torn in several places. No telephone in room but front desk refused to make tel call for taxi. Manager very belligent; to ask for service was to be treated as though guests begged for charity

First of all, after a March 2007, email confirmation of a reservation, Big Surf didn't have our reservation on their records. Even when we showed them the email confirmation they acted rude. The front office clerk was rude. The room was small, poor quality of furniture, no perks, no air conditioner. The parking was $5.00 and very tight and not safe. Weird people were hanging around. The location was good but we really didn't want to stay there that night. In our room, the walls were paper thin. The men across the way in the back were drinking on the balcony until 2 am. It sounded as if they were in our room. It was horrible. We couldn't sleep. Do not stay here. Spend the extra money and get somewhere nice.

I would not stay at this hotel again. Pictures on the internet were very deceiving. The room was very small. No carpet, tile floors. The toilet kept running. Also I arrived early before check in and I had informed the hotel prior to arriving and asked if I could leave my bag at the office. it was not put in a protected area they had me chain it to a table in the lobby. I have never done this before. When I returned at noon my room was still not ready and the person at the desk could not find the key to unlock my bag. She found the key and I went up to my room and it was still being cleaned. The sheets on the bed were hanging below the bedspread. Above the bathroom sink was this cabinet over the mirror and I had to duck to see in the mirror. It was definetly a low budget hotel and the saying applies"you get what you pay for".It was a bad choice.Other hotels were recommended by friends and business associates and I should have taken their advice. For 25.00 dollars more I could have stayed in a much nicer hotel.

Room describe was not the we recieved. The room we were given did not have air conditioning. We were not offered another room. The refussed to discuss the deposit that was charged to my credit card. I would highly recommand that you drop Big surf. We value your service. We plan on returning to honolulu in the near future.

We were charged for two babies AT THE TIME OF CHECK OUT, not when we were checking in when they could plainly see our babies, they took it out of a key deposit that was not mentioned on the website. They refused to give us a receipt for the charges for the babies. On top of that, the manager harassed us even though we paid. The rooms were in terrible condition, with ants and cockroaches. I will never stay at this hotel again. I urge venere to reconsider its relationship with this hotel.

The furnishings in the room were quite old, and the beds were extremely small. Larger beds would make the room much nicer.

Compared to an expensive high quality hotel- these rooms were much bigger. there were three of us in the ocean front suite-- it really wasnt oceanfront but we had so much room. this was probably one of the best budget hotels I have stayed in. I would defenitely go back.

I would NEVER EVER stay here again.

I stayed on 6th floor without elevator. I do not recomend any one to go to that Hotel

Good location, walking distance from Ala Moana Shopping Centre, bus stops, restaurants and fast food and Alamo. Don't expect any service from the from desk. The picture shown in the advertisement is probably the best room they have in the property. There is limited parking and you have to pay extra for parking. The 2 light bulbs in the bedroom area were all blown out. We have to unpack with the light from the bathroom. We reported this to the front desk and we were asked if we could change is ourselves. We received 1 light bulb and changed the one for the lamp. The one for the ceiling fan was never changed during our 3-night stay. The kitchen sink serves as the sink for the bathroom, the mirror is right under the cabinet and there is no light there and don't expect to shave in front of that mirror. Bring a portable mirror with you. The kitchen sink serves as the sink for the bathroom, the mirror is right under the cabinet and there is no light there and my husband cannot shave in front of that mirror. Bring a portable mirror with you. There is no housekeeping, they only change towels for you, you have to ask them if you run out of soap and toilet paper. It is suspected they never mop the floor. We spilled some water on the tile and wiped it with toilet paper, the dirt it picked up on the white toilet paper is the most disgusting thing I have ever see. The mattress and box are in terrible shape. You can see leftover soap from previous guest blend in/stuck with the soap holder. There is also mould/fungus between the bathroom tiles. I agree with the previous reviewer, you get what you pay for.

centrally located, near the convention center; not on the beach, but only a 8-minute walk. Nice porch, and a nice breeze (at least in my room on the 12th floor). small fridge and microwave. Reasonable value.

Big Surf was a budget hotel room in good location. Lobby was dingy. Room below average. No public areas to speak of. A little depressing. But considering the cost of most places in Honolulu this is a low cost option. For the money you couldn't expect a whole lot more. Would not reccommend this to anyone looking for a nice vacation. Is primarily a spot to be in a great location without having to spend a lot of money. Not for families. Mainly for singles used to cheaper European style rooms.

the front check in desk was a mess, they never changed the sheets on my bed untill the last day...and they just left the sheets there for me to change it! they advertised a rate of $66 a night in there front window when we the same room for $79.00 *would never stay here again* you can find better place for the same rate in waikiki

Giving 2 stars to this hotel is very ambicious. Our room was so tiny, we had to reorganize the furniture in order to walk around it. At first we dindn't care 'cause we thought we were paying a very low rate, but surprise! when we came back to HNL from Big Island, we went to the Aqua Island Colony -right in the middle of Waikiki- for $5 more per day, and it was so much better we could not believe it. The attention at the BSurf is so poor that they expect you to tell them to clean your room in order to do so. We definitly never go back and would not recommend this property to anyone.

Based on the other comments on this site regarding Big Surf, I almost went with a more expensive hotel with higher ratings. However, I ended up deciding to try the place out for two nights and I loved it! The room was small but clean and tidy. It was obvious the place had seen some heavy use and there were some minor flaws, but you get what you pay for (still far from the squalid hell-hole that others described). If you want a 4-5 star resort, this place obviously isn't for you. If you want a nice place to sleep (I didn't come to Hawaii to stay in a hotel room all day) for the cheapest rates in Honolulu (that I found at short notice anyway), check out Big Surf.
no correspondence between prices quoted on web pages and actual property. No friendly atmosfere there and no competence of employees at the reception.

first off the guy at the front desk was not very friendly then on top of that if u are not regeisted to the room u are not allowed in... no guest what so ever ... and on top of that parking was tight and it has it advertised as free parking which was not true... not recommened and will not stay at this hotel again.

Big surf is an older hotel in need of maintenance and TLC to bring it up to its best.

The man at the front desk (night time) was very rude and unwelcoming. The parking that was available was horrible (our car barely fit in the garage). The sheets were stained. We got what we paid for. The bathroom was very clean, though. I didn't like that there was no air conditioning. I will never stay there again.
The office was closed when we arrived to check-in. The front door was locked so we waited 30 minutes outside standing in hot weather before the owner (?) finally arrived. There was another prospective guest and a housekeeper also waiting who appeared getting impatient and irritated. We checked in for 3 days stay and was required to pay in advance. Went to our room and was disappointed to learn that the room was not air-conditioned. I Went down to request for another room but I was told that non of the rooms has air-conditioning. The temp in Waikiki that day was a sweaty 85 degrees. We sweat it out in our room for one night. The ceiling fan and the open windows did not help much. We decided to check out the next morning because the weather forecast for the next 4 days would be the same - hot! The TV remote was not even working and the shower tub has no preventive mat against slip and/or fall. The only good thing about this whole experience was I got the refund of the money I paid for the extra 2 days.
It was so awful I found another hotel to stay out even after they charged my card. The light in the room didn't work, they had bars of soap propping it up and spitwads on the ceiling. The room was tiny and the elevator was dangerous.
When we first arrived at the hotel I was in complete shock. the reception did not even have a computer to deal with reservations it was all done by files. However the staff were friendly enough. Our hotel room was on the small side and the bed was certainly not a double, for two people in a bed it was very small. The room was clean and there was cable TV, and clean towels were given everyday. The room had a ceiling fan but was not air conditioned, and there was NO Iron. I was staying there for a week and could not iron my clothes, there was also no telephone in your room, so if you wanted to call the reception for any particular reason you had to actually go down. The location was good thought, i was close to the beach and the Ala Mona shopping centre and thats where you get all of the buses for day trips etc. On the whole after the first day the hotel was Ok but personally next time i would spend a bit more money and stay somewhere else for more home comfort.

You get what you pay for. No AC, lack of housekeeping, and general filthyness of the property should scare anyone in to reconsidering unless you're beyond desparate. It's a convenient location to Ala Moana and Waikiki strips but bit of a walk for the main part Waikiki beach.
7.5
there's good and bad: Good=this place has a great location with easy access to beach, parks, bus lines, shopping, and has water views from front of the building and is cheap. Workers are helpful when you get the chance to see them. Bad= you feel like you're in a bit of a sleezy no tell motel. This is the sort of place thats great if you're on a TIGHT budget and don't plan on spending alot of time in the room other than sleeping. ALL the surrounding places are 2 to 5 times the rates you pay here.

Beds in our booked studio were not covered, room not clean! They upgraded us to a 2-room apartment without price increase.

We read scary reviews online about huge rats and thousands of roaches. We almost cancelled our reservation, but soo glad we checked it out first. We got the top floor apartment, which was clean and fairly nice. The beds were not the best, but the views (They faced opposite directions)out of both balconies were awesome. The price was really good considering it was Honolulu marathon weekend and NOTHING was available under about $280/nt.(We paid $120 for 4 adults.) Would recommend it and stay again if we head back to Oahu.
By airplane The hotel lies approximately 4 miles/6.4 km from the Honolulu International Airport (HNL). The hotel can be easily reached by taxi or via the 24-hour Waikiki Express Airport Shuttle Service ($8.00 one-way or $14.00 round-trip).
Limited private parking is available and subject to charges.
