This hotel is rather hard to find, the address is confusing - the hotel is in Warder - very close to Edam - not Purmerend not Amsterdam. The bus to Amsterdam is quick and easy to use. Since this hotel is near Edam and is very rural it is very scenic and quiet.
9.5
HEM 't Tolhuus is very cosy with a nice atmosphere and a friendly and servile staff. It was nice to be able to come and go as we pleased. The service was good and kind, though the breakfast buffet needed refilling, so you could get some breakfast, even though you attended breakfast close to 10 am. The rooms where clean and with a suitable size, though they needed some repair here and there. DON'T count on parking your car in Edam and go by bus to Amsterdam. We got a parking ticket, even though we very tould, that parking where allowed. Go to Oosterhuis, park there and go by bus to Amsterdam. It's easy and quick - you reach Amsterdam in 20-30 min.
9.1
Nothing fancy, but great price/quality! I was put in a room in the house next to the hotel. A little bit 'scary' to walk over there on your own at night. Very friendly staff, clean room, ... They'll see me more often there!
6.8
when we got braekfast there was no orange juice, no croissants and some other things left ... and we paid that extra ...

Fabulous place to stay, even though it's outside city central.

POSITIVES: Beautiful countryside, very nice & helpful staff, plenty of towels, cute sheep, wise old pet duck in yard next door, 10 minutes to charming Edam by car. NEGATIVES: Waaaaay out in the country. Beautiful area, but you NEED a car. Our room was NOT like the one pictured on the website. Very small and cramped. Barely room for the bed ("King" was two twins, made up separately, pushed together). Tiny bathroom, 2'(60cm)shower with paint peeling off of the tile, tiny sink, an adult could barely turn around, and had to sit on the toilet sideways. One morning there was no water. Bugs squashed on walls and curtains (huge mosquitoes, bring repellant). Closet with 3 hangers, had to buy more. No drawers. No clean sheets (maybe we needed to ask?). The breakfast buffet was way overpriced for nothing special. For what was offered, it should have been complimentary. Made us skeptical of the restaurant meals, so we never ate there. The doors to the hotel rooms slammed very loudly. Bring earplus or early risers and late arrivals will wake you up. Internet unnecessarily expensive. We left every day and stayed away until night because there was no comfortable way to relax in our room. This is not the place to stay if you expect your lodgings to be a pleasant part of your vacation holiday. The staff is very sweet, but the Hotel is shabby in a 'not quaint' way. We would have moved immediately after seeing the room, but the website we'd booked through required full non-refundable payment for our entire stay (2 weeks) in advance, so we were stuck.
noise level from other rooms a bit loud from other guests late at night sometimes

Can't beat the price and value. We had a car, drove to Edam and took the bus to Amsterdam, very easy. Would def. stay there again.
5.3
We stayed in a 4 bed flat the older part of the building, parents in a double bed in first floor, kids in two beds beneath the roof. The wooden stair to the childrens beds was loose. The windows could not be closed completely. The radio was broken. The door did not open completely, so you have to be very slim to get in. All in all it was very cheap compared to other houses, but it also looked like that. 3 stars is not really apropriate for it! The area is quiete but the rooms are not. You hear your neighbours very good.

Poor!!! Many Spiders in the rooms! The receptionist said: "Normal"

nice little hotel in a village near amsterdam. great alternative to much more expensive hotels in the city. surroundings are excellent: directly in front of the IJssel-Sea, meadows with sheep and cows around it - perfect to relax after a stay in the city! rooms are clean and spacious, bath rooms a little small. breakfast offered is a little poor for that price. all in all a hotel worth to be recommended for a stay in amsterdam!
This hotel is located about 22km north of the Amsterdam A10 ring in the seafront town of Warder. The directions are simple, just take the N247 about 18km (past Edam) until the sign directs you to the right on a country lane to Warder. The hotel property is next to the dijk that separates the sea from the land. Sunset on the dijk is beautiful. - - - - The Tolhuus is clean and well-kept with a helpful staff. Our rooms (we were two couples and kids totaling 8 in all) had a loft arrangement with bedding for two down and then a ladder/stair to another two beds in the loft. The shower was large by european standards and the rooms have air-conditioning. - - - - - The breakfast option is worth buying...in addition to cold-cuts, cheese and bread, there is coffee, a variety of juices, fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals and milk, toast and jam, etc. - - - - - In addition to the hotel restaurant, the conjoined towns of Edam/Vollendam are about 5km south on the dijk road and offer great restaurants along the harbor/seafront and in the old centrum. The larger town of Hoorn is about 10km to the north, as well. - - - - - It was definitely worth the drive to escape the bustle of Amsterdam and enjoy the Dutch countryside (as well as a peaceful nights sleep in a comfortable bed).
We stayed at the Hem't Tolhuus on our first night of a two week trip. We liked it so much that we chose to come back and spend our last night there before flying out of Schiphol. (See comments from previous stay above). Not only was the hotel convenient to Amsterdam, but it was an easy thing to head down N247 to the A10 ring and then take the A4 to the airport. (About 45 minutes total). - - - - - Since our previous stay was our first night in Europe, we were unaware of how much of a gem this hotel is. During the two weeks, in addition to visiting friends, we spent 8 nights on the road and drove 3300km including stays in Germany, France, Switzerland, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. We now know that accomodations for two adults and two children in the same room are rare, as is air-conditioning (except at the mega-buck chains). To have both, *and* actual, comfortable, beds for all four of us...plus a reasonable-sized private bathroom and a quiet ocean-front location is wonderful. (We spent much more for considerably less throughout the rest of the trip). - - - - - Coming back to the Tolhuus was like coming home, and a perfect way to end our vaction. Many thanks to Layla, Leontine, and the rest of the staff for a great stay.

If you are travelling by car, this is an excellent choice to enjoy a long weekend in Amsterdam. Perfect not only for families.
Price for the room was great! Room itself was even better, not to mention the perfect surroundings. It is located next to the ocean and beautiful nature. Amsterdam is not far away, but this is where the true beauty lies. Very sweet hotel, trust me, I have seen many but this is top of the line! Do not let this excellent price to confuse you. Highly recommended!

Our arrival was a total disaster because the "receptionist" informed us that only 2 bedrooms were free instead of the 4 booked and guaranteed 6 weeks before. The "excuse" was "waterflows and humidity" in the other 2 rooms, but our thinking was that maybe they have had a little "overbooking" due to the macht "NEDERLAND - RUSSIA". We were 8 friends for the first time in this country and we had to accept the only way offered by those employee: 4 persons by each room till the next day. In despite of that, we were very proud of the rest our stay. Our only claim is for the saturday's evening receptionist Another "think" is about the "location" The name PURMEREND seems as not thru. Our "GPS Last version TOM TOM" had any information about "Warder" under the village Purmerend. After a lot of "enquerees" to "walking's people" we introduced the name WARDER as main village and... OH surprise!!! "all was OK till the destination" Could you have this kind of comments more times, I'll propose you to change the direction in your WEB page.

My trip to purmerend was to meet one of my friends who i had a very good time with during my stay. At the hotel i remeber jep, danny and jasper the most. the 3 of them were very very very helpfull. The rest of the staff was also quite helpful throughout my stay, the only complaint I have was it wasn't located as close to amsterdam as the site had made it sound by anymeans, site says 15 kilometers i think it was closer to 30 kilos. not the hotels fault by anymeans, and the staff and the view at the hotel definitly makes up for the slight inconvience.when I go back to amsterdam I would definitly stay here again.
7.8
Hotel is not easy to get to with public transport - it's about 4km from the nearest regular bus stop. Much better to come with a bike or car. The village bus only gets there once a day. Taxis to Edam bus station will set you back €21. It's a good base to explore both Waterland and Amsterdam & is right beside the Markensee. Hotel is basic, but good value for money (we paid €39 a night for a triple room without breakfast). Staff friendly and helpful.

I used this Hotel as my base for a business trip to Amsterdam. It was a little of the beaten pass and a little adventure to find the hotel at night but it was well worth it. If you need to get to Amsterdam in the morning stay on the country road (which will have a bit of a trafic back log but not to bad). The "Autobahn" will have bad traffic jams at this time of the day. It will take you 45 minutes to the center of Amsterdam if you use the country road. The first room I had was actually equiped with a bath tub whirl pool (a real bargain considering the price of the hotel). To bad I could not use it ;-). The hotel is nice and quiet. There are some wooden floors that might create some noise but I had no issues. As always with hotels that are not booked out every day remember to drain some water in the shower, bath tub and wash basin to re fill the odor stop. All together a good place to stay if you don't need (or are tired of) the attractions of the great cites. There is really nothing near the hotel except nature and nature. Drive to one of the nearby cities (Edam or Brock) and venture through the narrow roads. I liked it, good value for the money, don't expect marble or brass ;-)
8.4
Very nice hotel in a countryside, not far from Amsterdam (from EDAM 4 km from the Hotel - 20 minutes by BUS which goes every 15 minutes late to the night for 12 Euro return ticket) Hotel only needs better map for the web. It can be difficult to find it without better local maps from internet (Google maps) which I found and printed before. Good value for the money. We were satisfied.
7.7
The place is very good . Clean ,calm. But nobody at reception in the morning even when nothing left to eat for breakfast. The price of brekfast is very expencive .
9.6
Nice hotel in a very nice place, only 15 minutes of car from amsterdam and well served by public transports.
It is a lovely place, with very nice surroundings. We liked it very much. The beds were excellent and it was a quiet place. It was very good being able to put the car just outside the house. We felt safe.
This was our first stay at HEM't Tolhuus and we stayed one night. The hotel is situated in a quiet little village next to the Marker Meer (part of the Ijsselmeer). The landscape is very beautiful with lots of cows and sheep and the hotel is really quiet. Unfortunately the website didn't tell that they charged us 7,50 Euro for the dog. Also we found the dinner buffet with 27,50 Euro per person a little bit expensive. The only restaurant in the village was closed due to a private party, so we had no choice. The breakfast (included in the room-charge) was very good and offerd a good variety of things. The rooms of the hotel's restaurant were very dark except of one which was half outside but completely covered. And this was the smoker's room :-( Overall a pleasant stay with some little dislikes. The price-value is okay.
5.8
The room was ok and clean, but the restaurant was simply awful, sorry.
6.6
The litle hotel was quiet and clean. Unfortunately the young lady in the reception after the welcoming, asked me to pay in advance! This surprised and made a very bad impression to me and my wife (we thought we were an illegal couple after 20 years of marriage). The lamp near the bed did not light and we had to change room twice! Perhaps all this is nothing for a younger couple, but not for me!
7.4
THe Hemt Tolhuus is reasonably priced. HOwever, the location is quite remote from the city surroundings.
6.3
The location is terrible!
The web page says that the Hotel is located in Purmerend, a suburb of Amsterdam. Actually Purmerend is not a suburb of Amsterdam and it's not even located in Purmerend but in Warden, which is about 25 Km from Amsterdam.
Great hotel to visit rural Netherlands. If you want to visit Amsterdam you should get a hotel closer. Great breakfast and rooms!
9.9
I was with my parents and wife and the hotel as just perfect, not too far away from Amsterdam Down Town and really paceful surroundings. However if you are looking for Amsterdam's "Dark Side" , this is not your choice!.
we have a good time, very marvellous contryside, nice hotel, good service
Very nice area. Right behind the dam to the water. Without a car, it is not easy to reach.

Our booking for a double room was confirmed but when we arrived we have been informed that they only have twin rooms (no double beds). Swimming pool is just a dream, as well as the view of the sea from the lounge. Rooms are really small, bathrooms are essential but clean.
8.6
This place is an excellent choice if you have a car and do not want to park at the expensive rate in Amsterdam. The bus service is very handy and you can park your car for free almost anywhere close to a bus stop. The bus has a 24 hour schedule which is very good for an amsterdam weekend escapade ! However, the map provided on the website is very bad and I would recommend the owner to upload a better one. As a matter of fact there is a very good one on the hotel leaflet that was given to us on site. Finding the hotel was not that difficult overall but a better map beforehand would have been useful.
Notice to buy your bus tickets in advance (www.gvb.com), it will cost you about 8 euros (16€ if you buy them in the bus) each round trip per person to Amsterdam (the trip takes 40 minutes), there is a bus every 30 minutes from 7:00 thru 23:00 (15 m. in the morning, bus lines 114 & 117 - conexxion). Free parking in the hotel & bus stop!!!, or parking costs 3.4€/hour (from 9 to 24) in Amsterdam!! Breakfast is excellent, rooms are BIG! the sourrounding are country-style. Pretty close to Edam, it worth the trip to the city.
6.9
In general an excellent stay with welcoming and helpful staff. Standard of housekeeping with respect to the room was however very inconsistent, they always managed to miss something and in some cases did very little. Dining area suffered badly from flies and had no means of dealing with them. That was very disappointing as it's a clear health and hygiene hazard which could see the premises closed in this country.
If the hotel and yourselves keep the price in the close region of what I paid, I will use the hotel again. Just right for me as out of Amsterdam and in the lovely Edam region.Very goodbase for those who dont want to be in a city and dont want to pay the prices in Edam/Volendam etc - will recommend hotel to friends.
8.1
Our room was situated right on top of the dining room / sitting room and right in front of the the top of the staircase so for that reason it was a bit noisy from time to time but otherwise this is a very good hotel with reasonable prices.
Very rural location, but town of Edam nearby good for dinner. Outdoor pool as listed on facilities page does not exist, neither does lounge with a view of the sea.
First very very difficult to find the property same bed sheets everyday only got new towels everyday..... never clean the bathroom no minibar in the room but on webpage it says that Toll Hem has all rooms with minibars. The only good thing was Aircondition. employees were kind and always met with smily face. very nice, fresh air very quiet and peaceful surrounding.
Room and bath were excellent. Very rural location about 30 mins from AMS without traffic and 60 mins during rush hours. There is an outdoor swimming pool listed in the facilities page that does not exist so my children were diappointed. Lovely town of Edam 6 km away for dinner.
Maybe the only negative aspect are that there aren't heavy curtains that do not let pass the light.
Not exactly an 'Amsterdam Hotel', lying some distance from the City Centre. If however you have a car then the journey is pleasantly simple with a straight road into Amsterdam. The surrounding area of Edam and Marken is close by however there are few facilities in the locality. Directions were vague and you need a good local map to find the hotel. The evening buffet meal wasn't all that but breakfast was very good. Rooms were very good and very clean. The bar was comfortable with friendly staff and even more friendly opening hours!
Nice place to stay. Breakfast was good. Hotel is away from town so you will need transportation. Shuttle bus had been discontinued. If you love farms around you then this is the place. We enjoyed our walks in the evening through the farmland around the hotel. The price of the room we stayed in was a good rate. I would stay there again when I visit Amsterdam.
I was very pleased with my stay at HEM 't Tolhuus. It was very difficult to find the hotel since it is down some very very tiny roads. I don't recommend staying there without a car since the hotel is so remote. The hotel itself is in a very tiny town of only 50 or so residents. The hotel is situated just a few feet from the dike which you can climb onto for great views. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room itself was generally very nice, our room had a Jacuzzi in it at no extra charge which was very nice. My only complaint about my stay is that the bed were not very comfortable. The mattress was very thin and the single pillow was also very very thin. Overall I highly recommend HEM 't Tolhuus the price to value ratio was outstanding.
9.3
very good reception very calm and personal environment very sympathetic nerve recommended!!!
Quality service with a helpful staff, this little hotel is a bit off the beaten path but worth the effort. If you don't have a car, like I didn't while I was there, it is about a 3.5 kilometer walk to the bus stop. But, the bus service to Amsterdam (30 minute ride) runs twice an hour and the road leading to the hotel is fully lit up so that walking back at night is not a problem. The hotel staff gave me a ride from/to the bus stop on the day I arrived and the day I left. Nico the manager is cool and accomodating. The breakfast is large. The rooms are non-smoking, although on a busy night the smoke from the bar can migrate slighly up into the rooms, but not where it is bothersome. I will definitely stay there again since it is very quiet and out in the country while still very close to Amsterdam and the local town of Edam.
i found the service and staff to be excellent
9.8
I would recommend this hotel to anyone - the staff was very friendly and spoke English, the room was spacious and quiet, right next to the sea, though you couldn't see it because of the dike - very romantic also, and you could leave your car in a free public parking lot a few miles away and catch the bus to Amsterdam.
If you are using this as a base for Amsterdam, you will need to budget for a taxi - 50/60 Eurs each way. However, there is a bus during the day time at 7 eur each way
IMPROVE THE BATHROOMS OF THE ROOMS.
9.2
Only one remark: the shower in the bathroom did not work properly and in two nights staying it is was repaired only partly
A nice little hotel, which can be recommended both for holidays at the marker sea and for a visit to Amsterdam (with a good bus connection via Edam).
