It makes an extremely cosy base for touring this scenic area, or you can explore the footpaths that begin directly from the doorstep. A little further afield is Carlisle, with its Roman connections and 11th century castle, where you can take a trip to Hadrian's Wall, complete with forts and milecastles. Visit Glasgow and Edinburgh with its Botanic Gardens, Observatory and famous shopping streets. The famous border village of Gretna Green, where weddings were performed by an "anvil priest", is 20 miles away and 40 miles distant are sandy beaches, or just relax in the pretty, colourful garden.
