It is an ideal base for exploring this area of Northeast Scotland, which hosts the renowned Whisky and Castle Trails, and you can walk the Speyside Way which is a trail that follows the former railway line and is well worthwhile. The Spey is a noted salmon river (permits can be obtained locally) and is host to many species of wild birds which you might see along the many fine walks. In season, skiing is available at both the Cairngorms and the Lecht.
