Sleeps: 10
Bedrooms: 5

Dating back to the 19th century, this detached Victorian Lodge offers spacious, family holiday accommodation and is surrounded by gardens of 1/3 acre, offering fabulous elevated views to the west over the River Dee and beyond to Lochnagar. From the garden there is also access to woods behind the house, which make for wonderful rambling walks. The rooms are individually decorated and furnished to a good standard, and guests have use of a games room and multi-gym. The area acts as a magnet for the sports-minded, with fishing, shooting, golf, gliding, skiing and horse riding all available locally, whilst Ballater itself offers a good range of shops (many by Royal Appointment) and eateries. Just 8 miles from the Royal residence of Balmoral, Ballater was where Queen Victoria first arrived in Deeside in 1848. With the branch line now closed, the elegant train station now serves as a tearoom. A few miles beyond the Balmoral Estate, the village of Braemar lies on the upper part of Deeside. Overlooked by its castle, the village is the venue for the its Highland Games, the Braemar Gathering, held each September. First held here in the 11th century, the contests were originally held for local clans as a means of selecting the bravest and strongest men. Outside the village, pleasant walks are to be found in the surrounding countryside and also by the Linn of Dee, where the river drops through a narrow gorge, whilst for the more adventurous, paths even lead up into the heart of the Cairngorms. Further afield is the town of Forfar, whose wide High Street is framed by some impressive Victorian architecture and old-fashioned shops. The town's loch is surrounded by a pleasant country park with a visitors' centre and 3-mile nature trail. For an interesting day trip, visit Aberdeen, commonly known as the Granite City. The architecture is striking: a granite cityscape created in the early 19th century, yet filled with some of the most beautiful flower gardens in Britain.
