Picture of Gallanach Cottage in Lochgair, Nr Lochgilphead.

Sleeps: 10
Bedrooms: 5

Lying peacefully by the shores of Lochgair, in a sheltered bay off Loch Fyne, this spacious traditional cottage stands detached and enjoys magnificent views across the water. Sea and fresh water fishing is available locally, as well as hill walking, riding, cycling, golf and water sports. The pretty fishing port of Crinan, 14miles to the west offers visitors one of Scotland's finest views - looking across Loch Crinan to the Sound of Jura, speckled with its many islets. Linking Loch Fyne with the Sound of Jura, the 9-mile long Crinan Canal provides walkers with a fairly easy route taking in some beautiful scenery. Within Knapdale Forest, which stretches from coast to coast, there are several way-marked paths set out by the Forestry Commission, ranging in difficulty from an easy one-mile walk amidst deep forest to the more strenuous, such as that taking in the ascent of the 702-ft peak Dunardry. The fishing village of Tarbet - once renowned for its herring industry - lies to the south, buzzing with tourists at the end of May, when the Scottish Series yacht races take place. A castle, an heritage centre with local history displays and an educational woodland walk add further interest for visitors. Four ferry terminals near Tarbet link the mainland with the islands of Gigha and Arran, to which day trips can be made; whilst further afield lie the islands of Islay and Jura, also accessed by ferry. North of Lochgair is the spectacular Crarae Garden, set within a glen and framed by a dazzling display of rhododendrons in late spring. The Auchindrain Folk Museum a little further on again gives an insight into life before the Clearances, whilst a trip to the Argyll Wildlife Park will also prove popular. A visit to Inverary, home to an imaginatively presented Jail, and an attractive castle with walks, is not to be missed either. Pub/hotel, 100yards. Large living/dining-room with open fire.
