Marvene is a detached dormer bungalow in its own spacious, well tended grounds and situated towards the end of a quiet cul-de-sac. The bungalow is on a lane which runs through ’The Green’ with its pretty little 12th-century church, and can best be described as an area of wooded peace and tranquillity adjacent to Bassleton Wood Nature Reserve, with its attractive riverside walks. The entire property has everything from the fully equipped kitchen/dining area to the two attractively furnished living rooms fitted with Smart TVs, plus superfast fibre optic broadband, giving it appeal to business guests as well as holiday makers who are looking for a tranquil setting, but appreciate the convenience and facilities of a major town. The wonderful private gardens are ideal for relaxing and watching the various bird species. The neighbouring town of Yarm is a bustling hive of bars and restaurants for a great night out and Teesside Retail Park is ideal for a spot of retail therapy as well as a multiscreen cinema for a rainy day.
Saltholme RSPB, the hide on the northern side of Seal Sands provides one of the best views of the birds including shelduck, knot and redshank. Occasionally bird watchers will see rarer species like the little egret and red-throated divers. The visitor centre gives a view of some of the amazing landscapes and there are plenty of opportunities to walk one of the many routes. Seal Sands is the home to over 100 grey seals and a visit at low tide almost guarantees a sighting from the viewing platforms. It is one of the largest areas of intertidal mudflats on England’s north east coast. When the tide is out, hundreds of waders peck through the mud. The colony of harbour seals haul out on the sand banks at low tide; their pups are born here each summer, making Seal Sands the only regular breeding colony of these animals on England’s north east coast. A short drive in either direction and you’ll find yourself in the North York Moors National Park or the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Lake District is further along the A66.
The North York Moors National Park has everything from pretty villages to stately homes, mighty abbeys to magical museums and of course, fabulous food and art. Head to the 978ft high gateway to the western side of the North York Moors National Park at Sutton Bank. It’s a fantastic location for walks and bike rides the amazing vista over Hood Hill, Lake Gormire and the Vale of Mowbray, or head to the coast and visit the vibrant fishing town of Whitby, or the traditional seaside town of Scarborough. The market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton are close by and there are some wonderful countryside walks out towards Osmotherly.
In the Yorkshire Dales there are spectacular waterfalls, dry stone walls and rolling hills. Durham is just a short drive a away and has a host of exciting attractions from award-winning museums to medieval castles to friendly family attractions and magnificent natural wonders, or you could even visit the walled medieval city of York. There is something for everyone right on your doorstep when you stay at Marvene Cottage. Beach 11 miles. Shop and restaurant 500 yards, pub 1 mile.
