Absolutely stunning! Tithe Barn Cottages really are simply beautiful. Situated behind Seaton Holme Manor House in Easington Village, on a working farm, and steeped in so much history of their own, each property has been lovingly renovated and furnished to the highest of standards whilst keeping contemporary and top quality fittings alongside 13th-century original features. Dating back many hundreds of years, this Grade II* listed property was once part of the nearby Seaton Holme manorial complex which was originally built as a retreat for the Prince Bishops and monks at nearby Durham Cathedral. There is also some suggestion that it was home to English pope, Nicholas Brakespeare, for a short time. It was used to collect tithes which was a tax payable to the church (hence the name of the cottages). It seems that until fairly recent times the building has had close links with the church and Durham Cathedral. The building was split into three cottages and now boasts The Farmhouse (ref UKC1937), The Hayloft (ref UKC1938) and The Byre (ref UKC1939).

The Farmhouse, with its exposed oak beams, which have been carbon dated back to the time of King Henry VIII, boasts spacious and airy accommodation and offers a wood burner and original stone walls. The kitchen is contemporary with excellent quality appliances, and on the first floor, the bedrooms boast original features and beams. The double bedroom has an original gothic arch window which looks out onto Seaton Holme, and the master bedroom has a super amount of space, not to mention the family bathroom, which is out of this world!

Perfect for entertaining and guests wanting to share a holiday, The Hayloft has remains of a Saxon window on its east gable. The property is spacious, light and simply stunning with original features and a cosy love seat looking out through the floor-to-ceiling original gothic arch window onto Seaton Holme.
On the ground floor is The Byre, with its ancient door and many wonderful original features. All on one level, it is cosy, comfortable, and ideal for smaller families. Children will be able to peer out into the cow sheds behind the property.

Easington Village is a short walk away, where you can enjoy the local hospitality. Approximately 3 miles from the coast, you can spend a day at the seaside as well as exploring the many walking paths and cycle routes that cross the village. Just a few miles away is the National Trust coastal path which runs the length of Durham’s coastline and includes Seaham, renowned for its world famous sea glass. The beach at Easington is an excellent place to collect sea glass, and local sea glass lovers have been known to call it ’The Secret Beach’. The adjoining village is Easington Colliery, which as the name suggests, grew up around the coal mine. The film ’Billy Elliot’ was shot here and some of the buildings used as the backdrop can still be seen. Durham, a World Heritage Site, makes for a great day out, with its historic sites and many cafés, bistros and restaurants. Should you have friends or family studying at Durham University, or attending graduation ceremonies and taster weeks, the halls and main campuses are within easy reach. Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead for the Great North Run and the Metrocentre are nearby, and within an hour is North Yorkshire or the Northumberland coast. Perfect for those extra special celebrations or for a quiet romantic break, Tithe Barn Cottages really do have something special to offer at any time of year. Beach 3 miles. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant ½ mile. The Farmhouse (ref UKC1937), The Hayloft (ref UKC1938) and The Byre (ref UKC1939) can be booked together to accommodate up to 12 guests.
