Packed with history and attractions, and all within an easy 10-minute drive, each destination offers guests a variety of different places to explore. There are many established public footpaths that lead directly from the house, along the beck and through the hills and dales of County Durham and Weardale Valley. Cyclists, ramblers and leisurely walkers will find many walks and cycle paths for guests of all abilities, that will take you towards Escomb, 2½ miles, with its church that was the earliest Saxon church in Britain, Witton-le-Wear, 2 miles, Staindrop, 9 miles, and Barnard Castle, 15 miles, with its weekly farmers’ market and super selection of pubs, restaurants and shops. Shildon National Railway Museum is perfect for train enthusiasts and is just 5 miles away. Witton Castle in Witton-le-Wear offers fly fishing, bird sanctuary, historic castle and beautiful grounds. Stodowa is located just 3 miles away from Bishop Auckland, home to the annual Kynren Eleven Arches Spectacular Show and the start of the Weardale Railway which hosts the Polar Express each November and December.
