Sleeps: 6

In an outstanding location on the west coast of Argyll, this detached holiday cottage is peacefully set in a tiny hamlet overlooking Loch Sween, with stunning views in every direction. Offering attractive accommodation of a very high standard, the holiday cottage has its own patio with furniture and a large, secure, grassed garden to the rear. All around are wonderful walks, from gentle strolls along the lochside to bracing hikes in the surrounding hills. Loch Sween is perfect for fishing, sailing and windsurfing, and riding is available locally. The ruins of Scotland's earliest stone castle, the 11th-century Castle Sween, can be found on the eastern shores of the loch, in a beautiful and tranquil setting, as can the 13th-century Kilmory Chapel. Nearby is the pretty harbour village of Crinan and the Crinan Canal. The canal joins Loch Fyne to the west coast and is busy with fishing boats and yachts. A walk along the towpath is both picturesque and pleasantly unstrenuous, and a short walk up through Crinan Wood to the hill above Crinan will give a bird's eye view of the sea loch and its setting. Boat trips can be organised from Crinan's harbour; from here the waymarked three-mile Crinan Walk meanders through the nearby Forestry Commission plantation, with excellent views out to sea. This is an ideal position for exploring the Western Isles, with regular ferries from Oban (1 hour's drive) to Mull, Coll, Tiree and Iona, and from Kennacraig (45 minutes' drive) to Islay, Jura and Colonsay. These islands, warmed by the Gulf Stream, are blessed with a mild climate and a varied landscape - from bleak mountains and wooded hillsides to sheltered bays and sandy beaches - while ruined castles and finely carved Celtic crosses are reminders of their rich history. A short drive away at Lochgilphead (8 miles) is a variety of shops, a swimming-pool, cycle hire and golf. The Tayvallich Inn and the restaurant at the Crinan Hotel both serve delicious seafood and are 5 miles away. A short drive away is the famous National Trust for Scotland Crarae Garden. Porch with convenient boot box, leading to large entrance hall. Spacious, open-plan sitting/dining-room with open fire. Newly fitted, well-equipped, stylish kitchen.
