Architecturally, they are magnificent sandstone buildings with bold classical details. The interiors have a scale and proportion hardly imaginable today, with exquisite cornices, high ceilings and richly crafted carpentry. The large windows flood the rooms with natural light and the timber floors are redolent of a bygone era. The Mews Cottages (SLLH, SLLJ & SLLK), each with its own small, enclosed garden, sit within the St Albans grounds. They have been designed in a contemporary manner using traditional materials to complement the original buildings. Each has a balcony and is elegantly furnished and decorated, combining a sense of home comfort with new technologies and security. The centrepiece of the Mews is The Coach House (SLLD), a charming original 19th-century cottage which has been refurbished and sensitively extended within its own south-facing garden.
