With its little garden leading down to the shore of Loch Carron, this cottage is quietly set within easy walking distance of the shops, hotel and other amenities of Plockton, acclaimed as the west coast's prettiest village. One of a pair , it has been equipped to a very high standard and its garden leads down to the water's edge. The equable climate found in this particular part of Scotland enables palm trees and other exotic plants to flourish out of doors, and the village's enchanting beauty is often captured on canvas by artists who come to Plockton to experience its perfect combination of unusually good lighting effects and picture book setting. Sheltered beneath a ring of mountains, its little harbour comes alive during high season, and the village welcomes a wave of tourists - partly drawn by its association with the drama series Hamish Macbeth filmed here during the 1990s. Apart from sailing, fishing and seal-spotting, boat trips can be arranged, and there are several good places for eating out. A little further south, Kyle of Lochalsh offers a shopping centre. No more than a rocky promontory before the railway was extended from Stromeferry, it looks across the narrow strait to the island of Skye. Running east of Kyle, along the shore of Lochalsh, the village of Balmacara can be found, with a road leading off to Lochalsh Woodland Garden, which comes under the care of the National Trust for Scotland. A good spot for picnics, where views along the Sound of Sleat can be admired, is to be found at Reraig, and just past the former fishing village of Dornie, where the lochs Alsh, Duich and Long merge, the much-photographed Eilean Donan Castle stands enchantingly silhouetted against a background of forested hills. The Isle of Skye road bridge is just 6miles and offers easy access to this beautiful island. The Clan Donald Visitor Centre, housed in Armadale Castle, traces the history of the Gaels, with guided nature walks in the handsome grounds. Trips can be taken to view the seal colony on Eilean Mhal, or visit the Forestry Commission Otter Hide. Fly fishing locally. Open-plan sitting/dining-room with multi-fuel stove and double sofa bed (for +2). Well-fitted kitchen with breakfast area. Bathroom/W.C. with shower cubicle. First floor: Double bedroom (5ft bed).
