Picture of The Boathouse in Crinan Harbour, by Lochgilphead, Argyll.

Sleeps: 8
Bedrooms: 3

Stunningly set on the water's edge at Crinan Harbour and with splendid views to the islands of Jura and Scarba , this fine, architect-designed property has been built in the style of an old boathouse. Offering extremely spacious and very comfortable accommodation in its attractively and artistically schemed interior, it has two wooden sun decks, one overlooking the sea and one to the rear, built into the hillside. Just half a mile away, Crinan's bustling yacht basin offers a wealth of interests in summer; there is a choice of eating places and a chandlers on the quayside, including an excellent seafood restaurant at the renowned Crinan Hotel. The towpath of the famous Crinan Canal starts here, with opportunities for walking (or cycling) its 7-mile length from the sea at Crinan to Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig and Lochgilphead (where there is a variety of shops and restaurants, as well as a cinema and sports centre). There are wonderful local forest and coastal walks and good fishing in the area. For peace and quiet and some great walking, the island Of Jura is one of the wildest and most mountainous of the inner Hebrides. It was here that George Orwell lived for a while and wrote his most famous book, 1984. His remote house can be seen to the north of the island, as can the whirlpool which nearly drowned him in 1947. One of the world's most spectacular whirlpools, the Gulf of Corrievrechan is situated between Jura and Scarba and at times water shoots deafeningly some 20ft up into the air. Within an hour's drive are Oban and Tarbert (both with ferries to the islands) and facilities for riding and golf. Tarbert is a charming fishing village sheltering an attractive little bay backed by rugged hills. In addition to an ivy-strewn ruined castle and a lovely shell beach, there is also an excellent heritage centre which has exhibitions on local history and an educative woodland walk that gives you the chance to get close to the local wildlife. External staircase to first floor: Spacious sitting/dining-room with wood-burning stove, two sofa-beds (for alternative sleeping only) and kitchen area. Cosy double bedroom (6ft bed).
