"Authentic holiday cottages set on a historic working farm for a unique rural escape..."
Situated in the heart of the South Shropshire Hills, an AONB, the ancient and private Acton Scott Estate has remained largely intact, and within the ownership of the Acton family for some 800 years. Comprising a number of small farms and cottages, set amongst 1200 acres of rolling pastures and woodland, its landscape has changed little in two centuries. At the centre of the estate is the Elizabethan mansion, next to which is the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, where the land is worked with shire horses to demonstrate the farming practices of 1900, and is open to the public from April to October, together with The School House Café serving light meals and teas. The property offered here dates back 400 years, and offers most attractive holiday accommodation, with unique period details. There are many footpaths on the estate for varied walks providing landscape views, historic features and wildlife. The hamlet of Henley, a small settlement of early medieval origins, still boasts an open common, where local farmers can let their sheep graze. The Henley name may indicate an origin as a wood, where birds were kept. The surrounding area offers a profusion of activities for all ages. The spectacular scenery of the Church Stretton Hills and Welsh Border Country is ideal countryside for walking, cycling and horse riding, whilst Church Stretton and Ludlow provide sports centre facilities, including swimming, tennis and golf. Close by are the medieval towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury, both with fine castles and a wealth of Tudor, Queen Anne and Georgian architecture, as well as theatres, cinemas, restaurants and good shopping. The new Ludlow Food Centre showcases locally produced foods and the Conservatory Barn Café and is suitable for all the family. Amongst the many country houses and historic sites to visit are Stokesay Castle, Weston Park, Berrington Hall, Ironbridge, Powis Castle, Wenlock Priory and Wroxeter Roman city, all within easy reach. Whilst remaining fairly isolated, the Acton Scott Estate is within a mile of the main north-south county route - the A49, which passes through the Stretton Hills of Shropshire, with further links to the main motorway network. Henley Cottage (ROO4) will complement the Acton Scott Estate's existing and larger holiday rental properties (RJJ3 & RNP) - albeit these have been renovated to provide every possible modern day comfort, whilst retaining a wealth of period details, their original character and quality.
Approached by a private track that winds through fields and woodland, the Shooting Lodge occupies a secluded position, being over a mile from the nearest neighbour, and not visible from any other property. Refurbished to an excellent standard, this spacious and unique property boasts an oak-framed banqueting hall, a large bespoke farmhouse-style kitchen, a log cabin summerhouse and a table tennis room. The patio and large garden of terraced lawns command views across open countryside towards Wenlock Edge. Spacious beamed banqueting room with open fireplace and flagstone floor.
