"In glorious grounds of woodland and gardens, with direct access to the wide waters of the Mawddach . . ." Stunningly set among wooded slopes and only 10minutes' walk through trees from the waters of the Mawddach estuary, these delightful cottages face on to a cobbled courtyard within the 70-acre grounds of Abergwynant Hall - a mix of formal gardens and woodland which offer excellent opportunities for walking. Once the hub of Abergwynant Estate, the Hall is now a country house. Five of the cottages here have been created from a row of lovely 200-year old barns; Butler's Cottage, is a wing of the Hall. There is plenty of space for relaxation in an enormous, shared walled garden, which in the old days was dedicated to the task of providing vegetables for the estate's kitchens. Furnished to a very high standard, these cottages retain the charm of their original character and the architectural integrity of their structure, displaying many old beams. Outstanding in interest for birdwatchers, photographers, artists, climbers and all nature lovers, the peaceful surrounding landscape of ridges, valleys and lakes runs deep into the National Park towards the peaks of Snowdonia. The popular Mawddach Trail provides excellent mountain biking terrain, and Coed y Brenin is a honeypot for cyclists. The long back of the Cader Idris massif challenges the energetic with some stiff scrambles, and rewards with stunning summit views (the aerial photograph above was taken from here). There is a wildlife information centre at Penmaenpool, established in the old signal box of a disused railway, the trackbed providing pleasant shoreside walks. For train enthusiasts the Great Little Trains of Wales at Towyn, Ffestiniog and Bala make an interesting day out. The Victorian resort of Fairbourne (5miles) has a sandy beach, one of many along this coast. Water-skiing and surfing facilities at Barmouth (8miles), as well as restaurants, inns and town attractions. White-water rafting and wind-surfing facilities available at Lake Bala - the largest natural lake in Wales. Several golf courses within easy reach, including one at Dolgellau (3miles), a snug market town, once the centre of a gold rush during the 19th-century.
