This magnificent and spacious detached stone house occupies a superb setting at the foot of Mallerstang Edge, in the Upper reaches of the Eden valley. Completely renovated to a very high standard, it is beautifully and very comfortably furnished throughout. With its own private garden, it provides an ideal base for exploring the excellent walks and many activities and attractions the surrounding countryside affords. Just a short walk away are the banks of the winding River Eden, spanned by ancient bridges, and very close by are Wild Boar Fell, High Pike Hill and the Yorkshire Dales National Park boundary. This is an area of natural rugged beauty and dramatic variations of colour and contour, with the past still present in ruined castles, churches, old coaching inns, village greens and old market towns sheltering in the folds of the rolling moors. Kirkby Stephen (4miles) is a cheerful town with a 13th-century church, many inns, restaurants and shops, and here visitors can board the Settle to Carlisle Railway and enjoy one of the most spectacular train journeys in England. By car, the steep climb out of Kirkby Stephen to the Yorkshire Dales, on the opposite side of the valley, provides one of the loftiest views in the region. Within easy reach are Sedbergh (12miles), a busy little upland town offering an ideal centre for walking in the Howgills, and Penrith (20miles), a popular and attractive town with many fine shops selling local produce. Nearby Brough is a picturesque town with many reminders of the past and the ruins of a Norman castle commanding views over the fertile Eden valley. Further afield, Barnard Castle boasts a splendid castle and the magnificent Bowes Museum and gardens. To the west lies the Lake District and to the north, easily accessible, are the north Pennines, Northumberland and the southern Scottish borders. There is golf, tennis and swimming at Appleby (8miles), with mountain-bike hire locally. Pub serving food at Nateby, 2½miles. Large entrance hall/sitting-room with glazed doors to living room with wood-burning stove in stone fireplace. Very large farmhouse-style kitchen with refectory table and double oven. Shower room/W.C.
