A hundred yards from the sea and 8 miles from Windermere, this splendid house commands superb views over the gleaming sands of Morecambe Bay, as well as the fells. Very comfortable and with a large conservatory opening out onto the garden, South Lodge House benefits from several extras such as an Italian marble floor in the bathroom, and piped music in its rooms. Set within 3 acres of gardens, with its own hard tennis court and croquet lawn, visitors can enjoy some of the exclusive private walks that wind gently through the adjoining preserved woodland, and there is a championship golf course and pub in the village just a mile away. Ulverston is well positioned for exploring both the Cumbrian coast and the Lake District. A pretty market town characterised by limestone cottages and cobbled streets, it enjoyed great prosperity as a result of the cotton, tanning and iron-ore industries and was known as the `London of Furness'. After the silting up of the harbour, the Ulverston Canal was built, which led to the town becoming an important shipbuilding centre for a while. Nowadays, the tranquil waters of the canal are a popular venue for fishing, with walkers enjoying the view across the estuary. North of the town, a monument in the form of a lighthouse stands in honour of Sir John Barrow, who was born here in 1764 and gained fame as an explorer, geographer and Secretary to the Admiralty. From the base of the Hoad Monument a winding footpath leads to the top where panoramic views expand over the entire Morecambe Bay where Blackpool Tower and the hills of North Wales are clearly visible. Also born in Ulverston was Stan Laurel, whose collection of memorabilia is on display at the Laurel and Hardy Museum near the market place. For those with a creative tendency, the glass factory Cumbria Crystal will prove interesting - visitors can observe the crystal making process from the glass blowing stage to the carving of the crystal.
