Built of local stone in 1864, in memory of Henry Hobhouse, this listed former school house nestles within its own valley surrounded by farm pastures in a designated Special Landscape Area. Adjacent to the 12th-century St Leonard church, in the ancient village of Pitcombe with its Domesday Book associations, it offers traditional architectural style accommodation with a modern kitchen and marble-finished bathrooms. Set in grounds of 5 acres, and retaining many original features, such as mullioned windows, it provides a charming and spacious base for exploring all that Somerset has to offer. The picturesque Saxon town of Bruton (1 mile), overlooked by its unique Dovecote, waits to be explored. Here narrow alley ways wind their way through architecture spanning six centuries, dominated by the famous twin towers of Bruton's fine perpendicular church. Many National Trust properties are within easy driving distance, such as the 18th-century Palladian mansion of Stourhead (NT) (7 miles), Montacute House (20 miles) and Kingston Lacy (25 miles). For a family day out Longleat is a must, its wide range of attractions including an impressive stately home and a superb drive-through safari park, which when opened in 1966 was the first of its kind. Within a 12-mile radius lie the historic towns of Wells, reputedly Somerset's smallest city, medieval Glastonbury, dominated by its world famous Tor, and Sherborne, dubbed one of the most beautiful towns in England and boasting two castles and a magnificent abbey. A superb network of well-marked walking and riding tracks lead straight from the doorstep, whilst good golf courses can be found locally. The area abounds with many inviting pubs and restaurants serving fine food, with the nearest pub only 1 mile away.
Spacious, open-plan living/dining-room (four steps down to dining-room) with open fire, arched wooden ceiling (33ft x 16ft x 15ft) and rugs on wooden floor. Galley-style kitchen.
