Formerly the home of the acclaimed artist Sir Alfred Munnings - famous for his paintings of horses, hunting scenes, landscapes and village characters - this magnificent Grade II listed property also used to be the venue where the artist held his special punch parties. Steeped in history, Mendham Hall displays many unusual and interesting features such as the Chess Room - a room on a split level with the dining hall and featuring a woodblock floor inlaid with a chess board. Heavily beamed, the house also displays oak floorboards, mullion windows and two very interesting and unusual fireplaces, as well as an enclosed garden with patio. Comfortable and spacious throughout, the Hall provides a holiday base with a difference and is set in the heart of the beautiful Suffolk countryside on the edge of the Waveney Valley. The Suffolk Heritage coastline can be reached by car within ½an hour, where the popular seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold, with its attractive Georgian high street, are situated. Renowned (along with Snape Maltings) for its annual arts festival in June and poetry festival in November, Aldeburgh is a quiet town outside the festival months and there are pleasant walks from there, one heading south-west leads to the estuary of the River Alde, an area rich in wildfowl, and one follows the seashore north to Thorpeness, an eccentric resort with mock-Tudor architecture, eye-catching follies and a large pleasure lake in the centre of the village. The city of Norwich, with its cathedral, castle and museums, and the Norfolk coast are also within easy driving distance. Pub 100yards.
