Set within the Exmoor National Park, close to Devon's county border, Triscombe makes an ideal base for a holiday in this beautiful part of Somerset, with unspoilt countryside all around and the superb Exmoor Heritage Coast close at hand. Reached by a 1/3 mile long drive, it nestles in a sheltered wooded valley overlooking the River Quarme. There are 5 acres of lovely gardens, with wonderful views across the valley, as well as being surrounded by 190 acres of its own farmland. The ten cottages offered here are a combination of 19th-century cottages and skilful conversions from original farm buildings, which are all clustered round a T-shaped courtyard in the style of a little hamlet. For relaxing at the farm, there is a superb indoor heated swimming pool (open all year) and all-weather tennis court (guests are asked to wear tennis shoes only and bring their own racquets and balls). In the gardens, where a pretty stream cascades down the hillside, there is plenty of room for a family picnic or barbecue, secluded spots for enjoying the peace and quiet, and opportunities to see lots of wildlife, including badgers, buzzards, foxes, red deer and an abundance of birdlife. The village of Wheddon Cross is just a mile away, with its inn, post office and shops, and is a popular meeting place on market day for local farmers. From here you can explore the magic of Exmoor, an area of wild natural beauty, inhabited by native ponies and red deer. There are heather covered moors and sheltered, wooded combes, pretty villages, with thatched cottages and ancient packhorse bridges. The area is superb for walking and cycling, with plenty of way-marked routes to follow, and is ideal for horse riding and pony trekking, with local stables just 4 miles away. There is good fishing in the rivers, and bird-watchers will find a wealth of interest here too - many small birds such as winchat and yellowhammer thrive on the bracken and gorse slopes, and dippers can be seen in the fast flowing rivers. Visit Dunkery Beacon, Exmoor's highest point at 1752 feet above sea level, and the pretty National Trust villages of Selworthy and Horner, or try coarse and fly fishing on Wimbleball and Clatworthy Lakes. A few miles to the north is Devon's spectacular northern coast, where steep cliffs plunge into the sea. You can enjoy fantastic coastal walks here along the cliff top coastal path, with dramatic views of the coastline and out to sea. There are some excellent beaches and resorts to discover, including Minehead, Dunster beaches, and Blue Anchor. For an entertaining day out for all the family, nearby Minehead has an Aquasplash leisure pool, golf, a lovely old harbour and a good variety of shops and restaurants. From here you can take a nostalgic ride on the West Somerset Steam Railway, passing through tranquil Somerset countryside. Not far from Triscombe is the medieval village of Dunster where you can visit the famous castle (NT), yarn market and pretty shops, followed by a delicious cream tea in one of the cafés. There are plenty more places of interest to explore, including the ancient port of Watchet with its marina, and the charming old town of Porlock. Inland, the county town of Taunton offers excellent shopping and entertainment facilities and is easily reached in under an hour. Near the market town of Tiverton (22 miles), you can visit Knightshayes Court (NT), a splendid Victorian house with a richly decorated interior. The pretty, stone-built cottages are individually designed, and furnished and equipped to a very good standard, with many personal touches. Some boast four-poster beds and wood-burning stoves, and all are attractive and comfortable. The owners' farmhouse is nearby, and was once the centre of a sporting estate. Ideal for families and couples alike, Triscombe Farm provides the perfect venue for year-round holidays and breaks.
