To the North of the modern city centre, near the harbor, lies the Castle of Chios. This fortress was built in the Byzantine times around the ninth century and then repaired after the wars during the Genoa occupation in the 15th century. At first, it enclosed the whole city of Chios, but soon the town expanded outside the precinct of its walls to its present size.
