Just across a leafy Georgian square from one of the most exquisite opera houses in the country, home of the annual international Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and the Buxton Opera Festival, the Old Hall Hotel is reputed to the oldest hotel in England and one time host to Mary Queen of Scots. The Old Hall's mellowed walls and many ancient rooms reflect the pedigree of its rich past, yet provide every comfort, cuisine and high technology expected from the best hotels of today. Writing in 1727, Daniel Defo said, “this is indeed a very special place”, which of course it is, even to this day. Equipped with 2 residents’ lounges, one with a television and the other for quiet relaxation, perhaps with a coffee or a drink, the hotel also contains a concert grand piano complete with parlour palm, though you might have to contend with a very serious soprano practising for the evening's opera performance.
